ADA Utricularia graminifolia
Utricularia graminifolia, a captivating aquatic plant and often one aquarists are dubious to try due to its difficult nature. It is often used in terrariums due to it being seemingly easier to grow emersed, however underwater it is a little trickier to get the environment right.
How to use Utricularia graminifolia
The species name "graminifolia" translates to "with grass-like leaves," aptly describing the plant's fine, elongated foliage that emerges with a vibrant green hue.
When planting, there are varying opinions on how to get the best results, this ranges from using nutrient rich soil but planting after the ammonia leaching phase, or using low nutrient soil such as ADA africana and providing nutrients via light liquid fertilisation or root tabs (not directly under the plant) when needed.
Some things we have found to help, is to ensure your water is soft with a low KH, water similar to what you would keep Caridina shrimp, and use moderate lighting and steady CO2 to improve growth and improve successfully carpeting the plant.
Plant Maintenance
Avoid harsh trimming as this will cause the plant to yellow and likely melt, and avoid large parameter swings as this plant is sensitive to changes.
Emersed Growth
It is native to Asia and belongs to the bladderwort family. This family is renowned for its unique insect-eating plants, and U. graminifolia exemplifies this characteristic with its perennial nature, thriving in nutrient-poor environments typical of wetlands and marshes. To adapt to these conditions, Utricularia graminifolia has developed specialised bladder traps that allow it to capture and digest small insects, providing essential nutrients for its growth.
Key Information
- Break up the plant into many portions when planting
- Use RODI or ensure soft low KH water
