ADA Microcarpaea Minima

Microcarpaea minima, commonly known as Minima Merrill, is a small wetland plant native to Southeast Asia, Japan, and northern Australia. This species is remarkable for its ability to grow both above and underwater, thriving in shallow, warm, periodic waters such as puddles, rice fields, and riverbanks. As the only species in the genus Microcarpaea, it belongs to the Phrymaceae family, which also includes Glossostigma.

It remains relatively rare among aquascapers, but its unique characteristics make it an intriguing addition to aquariums.

How to use Minima Merrill

Minima Merrill is an attractive choice for foreground or midground aquascaping, particularly in small tanks where its light green colour and fine texture create contrast against other plants. Its narrow, needle-like leaves distinguish it from more common foreground plants, making it an eye-catching element in the aquascape.

The plant displays a more chaotic and branched growth pattern, with stems growing upright and spreading in multiple directions. The submerged leaves are narrow and create a soft, grassy texture ideal for foreground plantings in aquariums.

Planting the delicate stems can be a bit tricky, so it is recommended to use tweezers for proper placement. Once established, the plant spreads to form dense, low-growing clusters that can be maintained with regular trimming.

Plant Maintenance

Microcarpaea minima is relatively easy to grow, but it thrives in conditions that mimic its natural habitat. For optimal growth, provide strong lighting and soft to medium-hard water. The plant is considered thermophilic, requiring temperatures above 20°C. Adding CO2 supplementation can enhance its growth and overall appearance.

Emersed Growth

In its terrestrial form, Microcarpaea minima forms compact cushions, typically ranging from 3 to 5 cm in height, with narrow, elongated leaves. The leaves are slender, contributing to the plant’s delicate, fine texture. Small, pale purple flowers bloom on slender stems.
