How Much Bio Media Do I Need?

As a general buying guideline, each Oase Biomaster media tray holds approximately 1 litre of bio media. We change all the media to pumice based media with the exception of the top 'red sponge' tray which polishes the water.

  • Oase Biomaster 250 - 3 litres
  • Oase Biomaster 350 - 4 litres
  • Oase Biomaster 600 - 5 litres
  • Oase Biomaster 850 - 6 litres

Why Use Bio Media in your Aquarium Filter?

This lightweight, porous volcanic rock offers a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise. These bacteria are essential for breaking down harmful ammonia and nitrites, converting them into less toxic nitrates, which helps maintain a stable and balanced ecosystem in your aquarium.

The porous nature of pumice stone allows for excellent water flow, ensuring that water passes through the material efficiently and maximises contact with the beneficial bacteria. This enhances the overall filtration process, leading to improved water quality and clarity.

Additionally, pumice stone is chemically inert, meaning it will not leach harmful substances into the water, making it safe for all types of aquatic life.

Using pumice stone in your filtration system is simple. Just add it to your filter media compartment, where it can work alongside other filtration materials. Its lightweight properties make it easy to handle and position within your filter setup.

Over time, as beneficial bacteria establish themselves on the pumice surface, you will notice a significant improvement in your aquarium's water quality.

Pumice stone offers several benefits for bio-filtration in an aquarium filter:

  • Pumice stone is highly porous, providing a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive. This enhances the biological filtration process, as these bacteria break down harmful ammonia and nitrites into less toxic nitrates
  • Due to its low density, pumice stone is lightweight, making it easy to handle and install in various filter setups without adding significant weight to the system
  • As a natural volcanic rock, pumice is chemically inert and does not leach harmful substances into the water, ensuring a safe environment for aquatic life
  • Pumice stone typically has a neutral pH, which helps maintain stable water chemistry, crucial for the health of both fish and plants in the aquarium
  • Pumice is resistant to degradation over time, ensuring it retains its structural integrity and effectiveness in filtration for an extended period
  • Pumice stone is often more affordable compared to other filtration media, making it a more budget-friendly option for aquarium enthusiasts

Incorporating pumice stone into your aquarium filter can significantly enhance the efficiency of biological filtration, contributing to a healthier aquatic environment.
