ADA Alternanthera reineckii mini
This plant is native to tropical and subtropical wetlands in South America, although the precise origins of the "Mini" variant remain unclear. Known for its compact growth, this cultivar exhibits a beautiful palette of purple-red to brown-red hues, making it an excellent choice for aquariums looking to enhance their visual appeal with a splash of colour.
How to Use It Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini'
Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini' is particularly well suited for the foreground or nano aquariums, where it can be pruned into a compact bush. When left untrimmed, it can grow up to 20cm+ but maintains a bushy appearance due to its tendency to branch. The leaves typically measure up to 5 cm long and 1.4 cm wide, although smaller leaves are quite common. The plant’s natural growth form makes it an excellent choice for a variety of aquascaping styles, whether used as a vibrant contrast against lighter carpets of greenery or as part of a layered plant arrangement in a Dutch-style layout.
Plant Maintenance
This moderately demanding plant thrives under specific conditions, favouring high light levels, temperatures between 22-28 °C, and a complete range of macro and micronutrients complemented by CO2 supplementation. Regular trimming of shoot tips at around 5 cm in height will promote branching and add to the plant's bushiness, while the cuttings can be propagated further. Moreover, compact bushes can also be divided for propagation.
Emersed Growth
The emersed version grows significantly taller, reaching at least 30 cm or more. It tends to be more elongated compared to the compact submersed form, developing longer internodes between leaves. Its colour remains deeper and more purple. It requires high humidity to succeed.
